On Monday, April 20, Gov. DeWine announced that remote learning will continue for all Ohio schools through the end of the 2019-20 academic year. Below is the email from Superintendent Matthew Miller to all parents.

 

Dear Parents and Guardians,

 

This afternoon, Gov. Mike DeWine announced that all of Ohio’s public, community, and private K-12 school buildings will remain closed to students for the remainder of the 2019-2020 academic school year due to the novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) health crisis. 

 

We know the governor’s order to close school for the rest of the school year presents a challenge to our families. Our district has been anticipating this possibility all along and will continue to work diligently to partner with you in furthering your child’s education and well-being. 

 

Remote Learning to Continue

Although our school buildings are to remain closed, remote learning will continue through the remainder of the school year. We will continue to adjust and administer our virtual learning plans and expectations, provide student services and resources to the best of our ability, and distribute free meals to our students. Grading will continue as normal, with the exception of grades three and four which will move to a “met/not met” system.

 

We are also working on plans to address any potential learning gaps that may occur during remote learning, including with our youngest learners.

 

Staff Availability

Our school district staff will continue to provide meals, support, and remote learning opportunities to our students for the rest of the school year. During scheduled school days, our teachers will continue to be available via email and hold office hours to support our parents and students. Teachers and building principals will continue to share their remote learning plans and expectations with parents and students on an ongoing basis. 

Students in grades 3-12 will continue to access their assignments through Canvas. For students in preschool - second grade, teachers will continue to communicate via email and the platforms they normally use, such as Seesaw. Our teachers and building administrators will continue to work with families with limited or no access to the Internet to ensure assignments are shared.

 

Administrators will also continue to work remotely and will continue to return emails and voicemails within 24 hours on scheduled school days.

 

What about services to students with disabilities?
Lakota Local Schools is making a good faith effort to provide such services. Case managers will continue to work with individual parents and/or caregivers to provide remote learning opportunities that are as closely aligned to the students’ individual needs as possible during these times of exceptional circumstances.

 

Mental Health Support

We recognize the importance of consistent and continued care for our students who access our school-based mental health programming through our partnerships with MindPeace network providers. Our professionals are reaching out to families to ensure they have open lines of communication during the closure and to make alternative plans if necessary. Our counselors will be monitoring emails and reaching out to our school families in need.

Central Office Hours

Although some essential staff will be reporting, the Lakota Local Schools Central Office is closed to the public until further notice. The central office staff are still available to assist parents via phone or email. Leave a voicemail at 874-5505 and your call will be returned within 24 hours. Staff will be checking and responding to their email daily.

 

Meal Distribution

Foodservice operations are ongoing despite the building closure and will remain in place throughout the remainder of the school year. Staff will continue to comply with the most current health guidelines when distributing meals.

After the school year ends, the district will continue to provide free meals through our summer meal program. The distribution of these meals is dependent upon the most current orders from the governor. We will keep our community updated on our food delivery model as we move forward.

 

Kindergarten Registration and Enrollment for 2020-2021

While our Welcome Center is closed to the public, registration and enrollment is still open. Click here to begin the enrollment process online. Follow-up appointments are being held remotely by our staff.

School Board Meetings

Boards of education are required by law to meet at least once every two months. Although school boards typically meet more regularly than this, school boards may legally cancel school board meetings and reduce the number of school board meetings to the statutory minimum. 

 

Our Board of Education plans to meet virtually and will hold its next meeting tonight at 6:30 p.m. via Zoom. Information on how to join can be found on the district calendar. The district will record this meeting and post the recording on our YouTube channel. Minutes from the meeting will also be posted online. Statements and questions for the public comment section of the board meetings will be collected prior to the meeting and read by the president. To submit your comment or question, please email schoolboard@lakotaonline.com by 4 p.m. on the day of each scheduled meeting. 

 

School Facilities/Grounds Remain Closed

Per the Governor’s orders and OHSAA, all school playgrounds and athletic facilities are closed and use of our facilities by outside groups has also been suspended until further notice.

 

Scheduled Spring/Summer Events

All field trips, overnight trips, performances, award programs, and parent-teacher conferences have been canceled through the remainder of the school year. All spring sports are on hold at this time as we await further guidance from the OHSAA.

 

Graduation

The governor and the Ohio General Assembly enacted House Bill 197 to address issues raised by the coronavirus pandemic. This legislation states that Ohio students who were on track to graduate at the time of the ordered school-building closure will be permitted to graduate on time in the spring of 2020. Our high school counselors and administrators have been in contact with any student in danger of not graduating.

 

We recognize the importance and tradition of our high school graduation ceremony. We have recently announced alternative dates this summer that are dependent on the governor’s orders for large public gatherings. If we are unable to have a formal ceremony in person, we will continue to look at other options to celebrate our seniors.

 

Summer School

With the current building closure orders, the district will offer summer school classes virtually until further notice. More information will be shared with families in the coming weeks.

 

Summer Sports Camps/Programs

Under the current guidelines, Lakota’s summer camps are on hold until further notice. We will follow the latest directives when determining the status of summer conditioning programs for our student-athletes, as well as marching band. More information will be shared about these programs as we receive it.

Retrieving Personal Items from Schools
We understand that our students and staff will need to retrieve personal items from their classrooms and lockers. We are working through options to make this possible, while following all guidelines set forth by the governor and the Butler County Health Department. More information will be shared by your principal as plans are finalized.

Status of 2020-21 School Year
No specific decisions have been made at this time on the status of our buildings reopening in August. The state continues to monitor the status of the COVID-19 outbreak and our ability to resume normal activities. 

In today’s press briefings, Gov. DeWine made it clear that no decision has been made about the beginning of the 2020-21 school year. Our district administrators have been planning and consulting with other education leaders and public health officials for alternatives to comply with the governor’s most current orders and maintain a healthy environment for staff and students.

Work Permits for Minors
According to the Ohio Department of Commerce, if a minor has all necessary paperwork completed and is unable to get the permit processed due to school closure, the completed paperwork may itself stand in the place of the physically printed permit. Employers should keep the paperwork on file, just like they would the permit. The formal permit should be processed as soon as the school is reopened.
